Currently going through what you went through (bad gene!) and I feel my diet and lifestyle is very similar to yours. Thank you so much for this information and this is encouraging. So delicious.

I really like how you said to get a full work up regularly- it is so important for people to do because it's better to know where your body is and if it needs something that requires a simple change rather than something more drastic like surgery or whatnot.Anonymousnoreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-9080115335226815997.post-90902340535934326772012-04-23T19:54:50.104-04:002012-04-23T19:54:50.104-04:00I'm glad you are empowering yourself with info...I'm glad you are empowering yourself with information to take charge of your health. The easy thing to do would be to take statin drugs.

One thing you might already know, but just in case your readers do not-----watch how much high fructose corn syrup is consumed. This stuff is the DEVIL, and it has been proven in more than on study to increase fat in the blood stream and at the same time, increase cholesterol levels.

The problem is HFCS is in EVERYTHING. Frozen juice, "natural" jams and preserves, crackers, breads, cereals---it's EVERYWHERE.

In addition to raising cholesterol levels, HFCS has been proven to increase blood pressure.

I certainly wouldn't want to take fish oil for the omegas. Ew. No thanks. May as well just eat fish, and uh, no thanks on that. Wild caught is bad for the environment and farmed is bad for the environment and the body, so what do you do?

We use Udo's Oil. It's a good product. We put it in smoothies, and it comes in a DHA formula, which is super handy!

Someone suggested adding coconut oil to the diet. This stuff is amazing and the refined type doesn't have a flavor at all (you probably know that but your other readers may not). Too bad it's so expensive. Great stuff, though.

Congratulations on being super charged and it's so wonderful your doctor is willing to work with you instead of trying to force you to do everything his way.Gina Guillotinehttps://www.blogger.com/profile/10960936063619812000noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-9080115335226815997.post-65658418535441801862012-04-21T09:55:08.984-04:002012-04-21T09:55:08.984-04:00Awww, Katie and Amber, you two are crazy adorable....Awww, Katie and Amber, you two are crazy adorable. I feel for both of you in your current health struggles! I can relate, though I encountered my real issues when I was very young, so I don't think it was as emotional as what you are both going through now. I love that you have both taken your health into your own hands, stood your ground, done your research, and are striving to be the best YOU that you can. Stay strong! Much love and light to you both!Anonymoushttps://www.blogger.com/profile/07519083400540096211noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-9080115335226815997.post-47759211266000473312012-04-20T23:41:43.250-04:002012-04-20T23:41:43.250-04:00Thank you so much, Amber! You are an inspiration in your openness recently and I greatly appreciate that.

I have also been considering some kind of vegan supplement and I *sincerely* appreciate the suggestion because there's just so much info out there it's hard to sort out what's helpful for my specific needs!

And yes, coconut over vegetable oil! I have been incorporating/replacing accordingly here and there - thank you for reinforcing this. :) I trust your food knowledge very much, knowing you've done extensive research.

Mad love, sistah. I'm here for you, as well, thank you hon. <3Katiehttps://www.blogger.com/profile/10676372508503967661noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-9080115335226815997.post-73859381886219306442012-04-20T23:22:23.439-04:002012-04-20T23:22:23.439-04:00Oh Katie, I know you know I feel for you! It'...Oh Katie, I know you know I feel for you! It's such a shitty situation to be in. I'm so glad you came out and talked about it.

What's your triglyceride level? Honestly, that's often a FAR more important number than cholesterol.

One thing I would suggest (if you don't mind) is to look into taking an aglae-based vegan DHA supplement (like this). Since you have blood lipid issues already, you MAY not be converting the ALA in flax/chia/hemp into EPA and DHA. ALA is good, but EPA and DHA are the really powerful omega-3s, so I like to supplement just in case.

Also...avoiding all vegetable oils is a great idea, so I'm glad you're doing that. But coconut oil is something you could safely add in! The medium-chain fats in coconut don't require bile to be digested, so they go straight to the liver and are converted to energy instead of triglycerides. And coconut is delish!

If you weren't looking for advice, I'm sorry! Ignore me :) But know that I'm here for you, and can relate to you LIKE MAD, so if you ever need to talk, you know where to find me. <3Chef Amber Sheahttps://www.blogger.com/profile/11751332126011127621noreply@blogger.com
